Sheppard snags runner-up finish with XR Super Series at Kokomo

Sheppard Riggs Racing and Brandon Sheppard invaded Eldora Speedway (Rossburg, Ohio) to kick off the 29th running of the Dirt Late Model Dream with a Thursday’s preliminary night.

With the 95-car field split into two groups, Sheppard followed up the 23rd-fastest lap in his group with a fourth-place finish in his heat. Chasing a $12,000 payday in his prelim, Brandon advanced forward nine spots in the 25-lapper to register a sixth-place finish.

On Friday evening, Brandon’s third-to-first run in his heat race placed him on the second row for his $12,000-to-win preliminary feature. Losing ground in the final 10 circuits, Sheppard held onto a fifth-place finish with a slowly deflating right-rear tire. He trailed Hudson O’Neal, Bobby Pierce, Tim McCreadie, and Joseph Joiner to the checkers.

For the Dirt Late Model Dream finale on Saturday, Sheppard followed up a fourth-place run in his heat race with a 20-lap consolation victory. Rolling off 21st for the $129,000-to-win main event, Brandon improved five positions in the 100-lap affair to finish 16th.

Joining the XR Super Series on Monday, Brandon stopped at Kokomo Speedway (Kokomo, Ind.) for the 100K Upgrade. With a third-place finish in his heat placing him on the fifth row for the $100,000-to-win A-Main, Sheppard advanced forward seven spots in the 100-lapper to come in second. He nearly pulled ahead of eventual race-winner Hudson O’Neal in the final five circuits but settled with second. Bobby Pierce, Ryan Unzicker, and Tanner English completed the top-five finishers.
